During the early '70s, the Pioneer CS-701 was a particularly popular model in the Japanese market, featuring a multicell horn tweeter, rear attenuation controls, and sensitivity over 93dB. This particular pair appear to have been imported by a returning serviceman, and are in stellar condition. The surrounds are supple and soft, the cones are crisp and unmolested, and the original fretwork grilles are intact, with no signs of cracking or repair. There may appear to be a blemish on the side of one of the cabinets, but it's simply the way the chatoyance of the grain caught the light. These are beautiful. THE HISTORY OF PIONEER Pioneer was founded by Nozomu Matsumoto in 1938 in Tokyo as a radio and speaker repair shop. In December 1953 Mr. Nozomu Matsumoto succeeded in developing the first domestic dynamic speaker made of original parts. It was named A-8 and marketed in Japan under the Pioneer brand. Robust, vivid reproduction is determined by the quality, not the size, of a speaker system. And Pioneer's compact CS-701 A is the proof. This 3-way 3-speaker system handles up to 90 watts of input and has high (93.5dB/W) sensitivity. It includes a large 30cm (12) woofer with high-compliance cloth edge for superb linearity against large signal input. The woofer cone is specially coated to improve transient charac stics and damping. The horn midrange, with a strong ite magnet in the driver, contributes to excellent transience and is ideally suited for dynamic midrange perfor mance in this highly musical system. For the highs, Pioneer has designed a multi-cellular horn tweeter for wide disper sion. Its polyester film diaphragm assures smooth response. A balanced crossover system with large ferrite core and indi vidual level controls, and the handsome, oil-finished, infinite baffle-type walnut enclosure complete the package.
