Many of us have been finding ourselves spending more time at home lately, and if there’s any positive in that at all, it’s that we’ve been given the chance to finally tackle all those projects we’ve been putting off forever. If you’re anything like us, one of those monumental tasks might be to attend to the growing collection of socks that are spilling out of your drawers. If your sock drawer is overflowing and you’re not quite sure where to begin, 1) you’re not alone, and 2) you’re in the right place! Here are some of our best tips and tricks for how to organize your sock drawer. Audit what you’ve got, and find new homes for what you don’t need. With so many different kinds of cool styles and patterns out there, it’s easy to suddenly find that you’ve accumulated more socks than you ever thought possible and maybe even collected a few that are now missing their match. It’s OK. We totally understand. You don’t even wanna know how many pairs we have! But anyway If you’re ready to commit to this cleanup project, it’s best to deal with all of your pairs of socks at once so that you know what you’re really working with. Pair up all the matches you have, then separate out all of your orphaned singles. Consider repurposing these old socks as rags, sweatbands or even coffee sleeves. Of the pairs that remain, think long and hard about which you wear often and which you haven’t stepped into in a long while. We’re big fans of Marie Kondo here at Goodly, and we love how the KonMari method of tidying up inspires all of us to remove anything from our lives that does not spark joy. Bid a fond farewell to those pairs that have worn out their welcome, and donate them! Use creative folding methods to save space in your sock drawer and time in the morning. We’d never recommend storing all of your socks loosely in your drawers. Not only does this take up a lot of space, but it also makes it really, really difficult to ever find what you’re looking for! If you’ve ever wondered if there’s a “right” way for how to fold socks, there are a couple ways that work better than others. The KonMari method of folding socks (we did mention we’re big fans, right?) involves laying your two socks on top of one another, then folding the pair into thirds (for short socks), fourths (for mid-length socks) or fifths (for knee high socks) like you would a letter. You then place them in your drawer standing up. The square method is another one of our favorites. It involves laying your socks into a cross shape, heels facing up, then folding the toe ends over before tucking them underneath. It’s a little more complicated, but gets easier the more you practice! Many people fold their socks by flipping the elastic over the entire pair to secure it in place; while this definitely keeps your pairs connected, unfortunately it can stretch the elastic over time and cause them to wear out sooner than you’d like! Separate pairs by color, style, length or occasion — the options are limitless! Whether we prefer short socks or long, dressy or downright wacky, each and every one of us has our own unique collection. Before you start sorting all of your pairs, think about how you wear them to come up with an organization method that works best for you. If you build bright outfits and always like to match your socks to your clothes, you might want to organize your sock drawer by color. If you have a sock style for every occasion, separate out your different styles based on where and when you’d wear them. Maybe keep all your work socks together, all your casual socks together and all your exercise socks together. Whatever works for your routine! Some people prefer to separate their socks out based on their length; this way, you’ll know which pairs to pull when you’re wearing shorts and which to grab when you’ve got on a dress. When left loosely in your drawers, sock pairs start to mush together into an amorphous blob, but sock drawer separators define your categories of socks. Drawer separators are a little bit like magic in that they can really make staying organized much easier. You can purchase dividers online or even DIY your own by taping pieces of cardboard together. Line them with colorful paper for a little extra fun! Staying Organized Organizing a messy sock drawer doesn’t come without its challenges, but it’ll be well worth it when you can finally see what you have — and find everything you need! Get creative with how you organize your sock drawer, and use the system that works best for you. Do you have another great idea for sock organization? Let us know in the comments! Shop Now!
