This is a vintage brown velvet suit featuring early 70s mod styling.  The jacket is made with peaked lapels and has a two button closure in a six button double breasted configuration. The shoulders are padded and there is a large patch pocket built onto either side, as well as a chest pocket.   The sleeves have three button cuffs, and the back has a long pleated centre vent.  The pants have a flat front, a pocket at either side of the front just under the waistband and have a wide flared leg.  The jacket is fully lined in a brown viscose fabric.   Age: very early 1970s, maybe late 60s Label: Fait En France Pour Le Chateau.  Le Chateau is a Montreal based clothing retailer similar to The Gap in that it sells private label garments only.  It has an interesting history.  Founded by Herschel Segal in 1959, Segal started by selling overstock from his family’s Peerless Clothing business, and after trying different clothing mixes and encountering financial ups and downs, finally found a winning formula during the mid 1960s by targeting the youth market and importing French and Carnaby Street mod fashion before most other North American retailers. This suit would date to that time when Le Chateau experienced its first large growth by importing from overseas.  Material: 100% Cotton velvet, excellent French quality Sizing: 44 is indicated but this is a vintage French size and I think that this is about a US size 34 with a pant waist of 30”.  Please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric into consideration), as well as the style of the jacket and pants: Jacket: Shoulders: 16” across shoulder seam-to-seam  Sleeves: 25” from shoulder seam Sleeve Inseam: 17 3/4” long Chest: 38” around, taken under the arms - in my experience, true size is usually 4” smaller than the chest measurement, so, as mentioned, probably a size 34 Waist: 34” around Overall length: 301/2”, measured flat Pants: Waist: 30” around Leg Inseam: 30” long Overall length: 39 1/2“ Condition:  This suit is in very good condition with no wear, tear, stains or odours - maybe a couple of small marks to the velvet, really nothing. Otherwise, this suit looks like it saw little use and was very well kept over the years.   This is a wonderful example of early 70s/late 60s mod styling imported from France!
