Mickey Mouse is about to belong to you and me. The earliest version of Disney's most famous character, and arguably the most iconic character in American pop culture, will become public domain on Jan. 1, 2024.
In a moment many close observers thought might never come, the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse will be free from Disney's copyright at the start of 2024. Current artists and creators will be able to make use of Mickey when the iconic character enters the public domain on Jan. 1 — though with major limits. (Dec. 21)
